Genteel genitals

Nudists don't expose their genitals any more than non-nudists expose their noses.

But whether you're a nudist or a streaker, the reasons given for why people should not have their genitals on display is quite interesting.

The "genitals look disgusting" argument, is somewhat subjective. I might find your greasy hair, or those old ill-fitting jeans disgusting too, but what will the response be, if I ask you to cover them up?

The "genitals are private" argument, is also subjective. Yours may be private to you, my bank statement is private to me.

"There are children around" argument, is no different to saying that there are vegetarians around. It pre-supposes that children (or vegetarians) shouldn't see genitals, for whatever reason. Ironically, young children are usually as comfortable with nudity as are nudists; toddlers are happy running around naked nearly anywhere.

The "genitals are used in the sex act" argument, tends to forget that our fingers, mouth and tongue, are often far more versitile during sex and foreplay.

The "genitals arouse me" argument, seems to be contradicted by the "genitals look disgusting" argument. And of course anyone dressed in sexy clothes can be arousing.

I am quite happy for you to have the right not to view other people's genitals. But I'm still curious why.

In the ancient world, especially in Greece or Rome, nudity per se implied nothing sexual but a mere lack of status or inability to find the means to clothe yourself.

Slavery was common and it was up to the master to provide the clothes necessary and if no money was available, well, the slave just remained naked.

I think the concept of sin, shame and evil associated with nakedness arose after the male dominated christian hierarchy decided to propagate their views on what was acceptable or not.

Do you know that they still had a hard time, especially with the open display of phalluses everywhere, including the daily bread, which was usually phallic shaped.

They began retaliating by marking the buns or bread with a cross, the original hot cross bun, as if that would make the shape holy!

It's funny to think that 2,000 years later, we still cannot view the picture of a naked body without a 'mature' tag being associated with it.

What about the female breasts?
Many in the west mock the Muslims who cover up, allow women to wear a small slip of material -in bikinis- covering the breast, that leaves nothing to the imagination but jump up and down if the breast or nipple is bared?

Socialization thou art powerfil indeed.

Just look at America's attitude to breasts (a) the Janet Jackson nipple incident and feigned apoplexy (b) the covering of statues and art (c) the disapproval of breast-feeding.

I can think of a lot more things that deserve our criticism, than a little bit of skin.

For some odd reason, most people of the world cover various parts of their bodies, including genitals. I would assume the reasons vary. Some are based on religious teachings, some on climate, and, maybe, some on hiding various states of sexual arousal. On another note, I realize that the fingers and mouth are used in sexual play in many ways, but, I don't pee out of my finger and I don't poop out of my mouth, and THEY are very private matters or everyone would have to watch where they walk. Covering the genitals and other nearby areas should not always be equated with sex. They also perform other functions. Just trying to keep abreast of the topic at hand.

You raise an interesting point, Marinade Dave.

Nudists will certainly tell you that nudity and sex are as different as night and day.

Certainly men and women used to share public toilets in 17th century Britain.

But you're absolutely right, everyone has their own reason.

When my sons were young, I let them see me naked regularly and often so that they would have no curiosities toward the male sexual apparatus that would lead them into dangerous situations later. They were able to look at my naked body without guilt and ask what-ever questions that wanted to, about what things were called and what they were for. On more than one occasion, they "caught" me with an erection and I treated it as nothing to be ashamed of. They learned from me that their bodies are completely decent and a central part of who they really are.
I also let them see their moth-er naked too and answered their questions about her body as well. I believe more boys would grow to be well-adjusted men if they were allowed to see adult nudity when they are young. I believe that a boy, or a girl, has the right to see both parents naked at times and in ways that are nonthreat-ening and educationa.
